Chapter Twelve

When Mayla landed in the entrance hall of Donnersberg Castle, no one came to greet her. She immediately felt that the mood there was still depressed — no wonder, given that Manuel had died less than twelve hours ago. It was also quite late, meaning that many had probably retired to bed.

Before she entered the castle hall to pass on Tom's important message, she focused her thoughts on one of the boxes of chocolates in her room and thought, Vola! A short time later, the box flew in and landed in her hands. Overjoyed, she opened the lid and let her eyes wander over the tiny treasures. A rum praline was just the thing for a day like this. She relished the chocolate melting on her tongue and closed her eyes. She was finally feeling better and everything was settled between Tom and her. How had she been able to go without sweets for so long? Then, she braced herself before joining the others.

The amorous grin on her face disappeared when she entered the gloomy hall. Was the information about Vincent so important that she should get everyone out of bed or was it enough to divulge it in the morning? Contrary to her expectations, the Inner Circle was still assembled. On their faces were expressions of sadness, helplessness, and dwindling hope. Because of this, they appeared to be mere shadows of themselves.

"Mayla? There you are, finally." Georg jumped up and immediately approached her. When he spotted the chocolates in her hand, his gray eyes narrowed and he studied her intently. "Where have you been?"

Not spotting Melinda among those present, she paused briefly before telling them Tom's news. "I was traveling with my grandma, but that's not the issue. I have important news."

Immediately, everyone glanced up from the table and all eyes were on her. "What is it?" Von Donnersberg asked wearily.

"I've just learned that Vincent von Eisenfels is not only leading a fifth circle, he's also embracing ancient magic."

"He's doing what?" Angelika shook her head in disbelief and stared at Mayla like an impatient mother would look at her child for saying some nonsense. "Who told you that?"

She breathed in deeply. The others wouldn't believe her if she didn't cite Tom as the source. On the other hand, wouldn't they immediately disregard any information knowing it came from him? However, there was no avoiding the truth.

"I met Tom."

"You did what?" Von Donnersberg sat up angrily in his magnificent chair and lowered the mug he had been about to drink from.

An incredulous murmur made its way through the hall and all but one had something to say. It was Georg. He looked at her as if he had expected it. He stared at her hands as if he could see Mayla grasping Tom's, and then at her lips as if he also could see them kissing.

Suddenly, he turned and joined the others at the table. He didn't wait for her to come with him, didn't pull out her chair,
